How Does It Work?

Syngenia's nanotechnology addresses the need for a fast and economical means for the detection, identification, quantification and removal of heavy metal impurities in both drinkable water and industrial wastewater. Current methods of detection and removal are either too complicated, too expensive, or too labor-intensive.

Our technology utilizes the capabilities of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in combination with electrochemical magnetic forces to detect, quantify and remove heavy metal contaminants such as mercury, cadmium and lead from water. Nanoparticles of magnetic materials, such as certain iron oxides, become magnetic only in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. This effect known as superparamagnetism can be used to manipulate dispersed nanoparticles in water. In turn, this enables the development of technologies that take advantage of chemically functionalized superparamagnetic nanoparticles for the reversible, pH-modulated capture and release of heavy metal ions from water and their subsequent removal by electrodeposition.
